I made a big mistake when I replaced a switch in our furnace

I decided that I was going to work on our furnace myself instead of calling to make an appointment with the HVAC company a couple of months ago.

The weather was really cooling off and I didn’t want to be stuck in the house without a heating system with the cold temperatures outside.

I don’t like being cold, that’s for sure. I know a little bit about heating and cooling systems since my dad used to be an HVAC technician back when I was growing up. I know the bare minimum, at least. I know how to change out air filters and I know how to replace burned out switches. The problem that I was having with my furnace was a burned out switch, and since I knew how to fix that, I decided to do it myself. I’m no certified HVAC technician, but I do know how to change out a burned out switch. I just happened to have one in my garage because I’m always ending up with leftover parts from some job or another. I’m a contractor and so I always have pieces and parts for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment laying around the garage. I changed out the switch in the furnace and everything went back to working well. That’s when I realized that changing the switch with a non factory part would void the warranty that I got with the furnace when I purchased it from the HVAC company. I should never have made that repair myself. I guess it’s too late now, though. At least it’s working for the time being.
